Simply Calphalon Stainless Multipot Review

Simply Calphalon Stainless Multipot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this set to replace another pot of similar size. I figured that this would be a great deal - it's got inserts and it's from Calphalon at a great price too. The tempered glass cover fits well and is helpful because you can see inside without removing the cover although it spits when the pot is at a full and rapid boil. It's a stainless steel piece so it's not dark when you look inside like many other Calphalon pieces. The aluminum bottom is not the same as on their commercial or professional lines. It's a heavy-duty aluminum bottom attached to a stainless steel pot. Even though the pot along with the bottom is thicker and heavier than most other lines that do the same, it did not heat up like other Calphalon pieces that I own. Still, I cooked a stew at a slow simmer for six hours and it didn't burn at the bottom. A good thing.
This is the first time that I have inserts like these and I don't think much of the big insert. To cook pasta or food, you need to add an additional 2 quarts of water (the amount needed to touch the bottom of the insert) making it more time consuming to use. I will cook my pasta without the insert and may use the insert as a colander/drainer. The small insert is useful because you can steam items while boiling pasta or other items
All in all, a good pot not a great one at a great price.

Coleman PefectFlow 1-Burner Stove Review

Coleman PefectFlow 1-Burner Stove
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this stove to go camping with my mom. We are not really big campers(i.e. have no idea what we're doing) and needed something that would fit into our back packs. I chose this one because of the Coleman name and the low price. The place we went camping didn't allow fires only propane stoves and I didn't want to break the bank. It works great, it's very sturdy and can boil about 3 cups of water in about 2 or 3 minutes. We made coffee, eggs, all sorts of stuff. It's strong enough to hold a full size frying pan. Puts out a lot of heat. It's really easy to set up and light. Can't beat it for the price. I would recommend it highly. The only thing might be if it's very windy I don't know how well it would stay lit, but I didn't have that problem. It gets the suburban blonde girl seal of approval.

Chef's Design 10-7/8-Quart Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker Review

Chef's Design 10-7/8-Quart Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are some great things about this pot:
It's made from stainless steel which is easy to
keep clean and which has none of the corrosion
problems that plague aluminum.
The price is right. You can pay a lot for a fancy
Swiss model-four times as much in fact and in this
case, you don't get what you pay for.
It will add a dimension to your cooking. Dishes
that used to take all day can be cooked in an hour
or two and homemade stocks and soups will return
to your table.
All of the safety problems that used to come with
pressure cookers have been solved and there's no reason
to deny you and your family all that good food.
Bear in mind that this larger size cooker needs
an appropriately sized burner and that any browning
needs to be done cautiously.

Fissler Blue Point 4.5 Quart Pressure Skillet without lid Review

Fissler Blue Point 4.5 Quart Pressure Skillet without lid
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this pressure skillet as a complement to a 10 quart Fissler pressure cooker, which I thought would be cost efficient since the pressure lid would fit both units. This item is described as a pressure skillet appropriate for browning, sauteing, etc... I was looking forward to being able to use less oil for healthier cooking, having read about the honeycomb Novagrill surface that is to be found in these skillets.
This pan seems to be a dead ringer for the pressure skillet (with Novagrill surface) that comes with a pressure lid, glass lid and mesh basket. Another website states that it does in fact have that surface. But that isn't the case. The skillet's surface is plain and flat. While it looks to be a terrific pan and very solidly built, it is important to know it doesn't benefit from that technology.
To get the Novagrill surface, one will need to order the four-piece set. Which I have done, I just wish it had been better described. As a skillet, I imagine its function would suffer a bit from not having the highly touted technology and don't quite understand why Fissler wouldn't make it available on all its pressure skillets.
I have written this review so others will not make the same assumption. Hope this helps, and happy pressure cooking!

T-Fal Vitesses 1.7L (7-Cup) Electric Kettle Review

T-Fal Vitesses 1.7L (7-Cup) Electric Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent hours researching every electric kettle available (and looking at them in person, in stores) before settling on this one. I've owned it for about 6 months now, and it's been great. The concealed heating element and the simple one-piece plastic jug design make it very easy to clean (not that I've needed to) and leak resistant (I assume, from a design perspective, since mine has no leaks yet). The only way it could leak is if the grommet sealing the metal bottom piece to the plastic jug developed a leak, whereas most of the stainless steel kettles being sold have several parts, many seams, and thus many places a leak could develop. There is some mild browning of the plastic inside the jug, I suppose a reaction to the high heat. This same thing happened with my roommate's older plastic electric kettle, so it's to be expected. People complain about plastic vs. stainless steel, I settled on plastic for one primary reason: it is a better insulator, so not only will it keep the water hotter for longer, it will be safer to handle in general (ie. it won't burn you or a child if it is accidentally picked up by its sides while it contains hot water). People complain about plastic "leeching chemicals" into the water, I haven't noticed any difference in taste, personally, and I doubt stainless steel would be much "safer" than plastic in this respect. The switch works great, and mine has never spilled water or over-boiled it (as long as it contains the minimum recommended amount of water). The spout and handle shapes make it easy to pour, and the locking top makes it pretty tough to spill. Definitely recommended, I'm buying another one for my parents right now.
PS - While researching electric kettles, I frequently saw complaints of how kettles designed for use in the USA don't heat water as fast as those in the UK. This is for a very simple reason: UK uses 240 volt power, USA uses 120 volts. Most electrical receptacles are rated for 15 amps (though the kitchen are often has at least two 20-amp circuits, per NEC recommendations). Watts = volts * amps, which means that UK kettles can get up to 240 volts * 15 amps = 3600 watts, while USA kettles can get up to 120 volts * 15 amps = 1800 watts. Manufacturers might sometimes avoid approaching this limit, perhaps due to safety or liability issues? Just note that this 1750 watt Tfal kettle is very close to the typical USA receptacle wattage rating. It's just about as high as you'll be able to get in the USA...most other USA electric kettles only go up to 1500 watts.

With 1750 watts of electric power, this high-speed kettle brings 1 cup of cold water to a rolling boil in one minute. Fill the kettle to its 7-cup capacity, and achieve a full boil in five minutes. The kettle comes in handy for making instant coffee, tea, hot chocolate, instant soups, and more. To ensure the water doesn't boil away, the unit shuts off automatically once the water reaches a full boil. For added convenience, the kettle lifts off its corded power base for cordless pouring, can be set on the power base in any direction, and turns on or off with a simple push of a button on the handle. In addition, the unit comes with two exterior water-level indicators that offer perfect visibility for left- and right-handed users, and its removable and washable anti-scale filter extends the life of the kettle and ensures scale-free beverages. Other highlights include a stainless-steel concealed heating element, multi-level temperature controls--from boiling to immediate sipping, a locking lid with a large pour spout, cord wrap underneath, and an exterior of hard, gleaming plastic that wipes clean easily. The kettle measures approximately 8 by 11 by 8 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

GT Express 101 Countertop Grill Review

GT Express 101 Countertop Grill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had a horrible experience with GT 101 Express company, and I am so glad Amazon is not selling this junk product anymore. I tried to order the item directly from the company and when I found out how outrageous the shipping cost was, I canceled the order. Three weeks later, I received six of these items and were charged over $200 without my permission. When I called the customer service at GT Express, the customer service people told me that I had to pay for the shipping of six items back to the company even though I never ordered these items. I told them this was illegal on their part, and they told me to sue them if I wanted to. What an awful service! Instead of sending all, I decided to use one to maybe save the shipping cost. What a big mistake.
The item is very small. The cooking surface is equivalent to a size of a slice of bread cut into two pieces. It seemed to look so much bigger on TV infomercial. Maybe the people on the infomercial are tiny people to make the item look bigger. Believe me when I say this thing is tiny.
Furthermore, the thing is made out cheap plastic. Even the non stick portion is merely painted black coating. After a few wipes, the black painted coating came off and everything stuck. The thing is a piece of junk and I regret the fact I ever dealt with GT Express.
I had the worst experience with this product and to top it off, I had a horrible experience with the GT Express customer service.

Sanyo ECJ-E35S 3.5-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker/Steamer Review

Sanyo ECJ-E35S 3.5-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker/Steamer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was a Christmas present to myself as I have been wanting a micom rice cooker for some time now. I chose this one because of the price, the 3 cup size, the Sanyo reputation, and the features. And a very wise choice it was!! My first impression as I pulled it out of the box was that it was extremely attractive and modern looking; the web site picture does not do it justice. The body is white with stainless steel accents in a very up-to-date style. It is small and easily tucked away if need be, the cord is retractable. The buttons are large and easy to read and access. The menu features a setting for white, brown, porridge, quick cook and a Korean dish called Dol sot bi bim bab. The instruction book is easy to follow, although you really almost would not need it as the controls are very self-explanatory. Included in the guide are some simple recipes, including one for the dol sot bi bim bab.
The main stand out for this model is a bowl that is built like a tank and is titanium nonstick. It is 5 mm. thick--by far the thickest I have seen on any micom rice cooker. It distributes the heat consistently all around the circumference of the bowl. Another plus is that it has separate markings for brown and sweet rice, showing the necessary higher water level needed for those types of rice. Since I mainly cook brown rice, the separate menu selection for brown and separate bowl markings for brown win this cooker very high marks with me. The bowl is a three cup size, but two cups fill it very full. This is the perfect size for a single person or maybe a couple, but a larger group might want to go up to the 5 cup size. (I might get one of those myself....I like this cooker that much!) I believe the 5 cup also has a steam and slow cook function that the smaller unit does not have. Not a big deal for me but for some might be a selling point.
I have cooked brown, japanese white, jasmine, brown basamati, and even Uncle Ben in this and basically had perfect rice each time. I have also used the timer to have it ready when I come home from work! My only gripe is that it takes 1 1/2 hours to cook brown rice, so if I don't use the timer, I have to wait on it. However, the results ARE worth the wait.
Oh, a couple quirks. The condensation cup is on the top of the cooker--empty it each time, or else if you move the unit, it could spash water down the front of it. I learned the hard way. Also, the clock will read 0.00 at noon instead of 12:00--the 0.00 does NOT mean the rice is ready if you happen to be cooking around that time. Also learned the hard way. Clean up is simple, the pieces come off and reassemble without any brain work. More work than a traditional glass lid cooker perhaps, but again, worth it.
Amazon seemed to have the best price and included free shipping for this model Wal-mart and Best Buy also carry it, but they were not in stock (in my area anyway) and had to be ordered--and you pay shipping. The unit has a one year warranty. It is made in China.
In short, this is a very attractive, well-built, well-designed little unit that turns out perfect rice at an incredible price. If you have any thoughts about getting a micom rice cooker, get this one!!

Product is very low grade aluminum, has a very cheaply made gasket. Also it takes 3 trys before I can get it sealed right. I've been using Mirro Matic pressure cookers for 50 years, so, I'm very familar with how to use them. It is such a shame a product so well known and used is now being made so inferior to older models. I will seek out parts for my older model and continue using it.

This cooker boils liquids at the "Low" setting and the "Keep Warm" setting maintains around 125F. Utterly useless for slow cooking. The whole idea of slow cooking is to maintain a temp hot enough to kill bacteria and low enough to not boil your meal at the low setting. What a piece of junk.

Last year (2008) our little planting of grapes finally started producing. We borrowed a steam juicer and were able to can about 42 quarts of grape juice (along with eating a bunch and selling some). The juicer was so nice that we decided to purchase our own. This Norpro Juicer Steamer has many of the features we were looking for. Stainless steel. Good capacity. We also liked this unit because of the glass lid which allows you to know how the process is going without opening it up (one thing we didn't like with the steamer we borrowed last year). I also noticed that the handles are designed to remain cooler than the other unit - another good feature of this steamer.

Proctor Silex Oval Slow Cooker Review

Proctor Silex Oval Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used my oval slow cooker for the first time today and made an incredible pot roast. Using a recipe from Rosanne Gold's Recipe's 123 cookbook, I modified it for the slow cooker. The 3 ingredients, rump roast, white wine vinegar and coffee were intriguing. It came out incredibly tender and flavorful.
The slow cooker oval shape is practical and my roast fit nicely in it. It looks like a whole chicken would also fit nicely. The size is perfect for everyday use but is big enough for entertaining too. Other crock pots that I looked at were quite large and would not work as well for me for smaller meals(i.e. a 2-4 lb roast or chicken)
The only negative would be that it sits on 3 legs not 4, which seems odd given the oval shape. Overall I would buy it again and am already plotting and planning my next slow cooked meal.

West Bend 82306X Stir Crazy 6-Quart Popcorn Popper Review

West Bend 82306X Stir Crazy 6-Quart Popcorn Popper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
May 9 2006 - Finally took a big step away from microwave popcorn due to health concerns (cancerous chemicals, dangerous chemicals used to coat the inside of the bag) and began looking for an alternative as I am an avid popcorn lover. I was walking through Walmart a week ago and saw this item on the shelves but decided to read up on it before spending $40.
So I came to Amazon and read over 300 reviews (I am a glutton for punishment) and it was so interesting reading what everybody said about this popper. First, 80% of the reviews are extremely positive, which was a good sign. Second, those who were not positive generally had the same complaints: turning arm grinds against the non-stick ridge and chips off the non-stick coating.
Today I bought one of these devices and must say I am very impressed, and I also learned a few things after reading 300 reviews that saved me lots of wasted time and gave me terrific results. If you decide to buy one of these for the EXCELLENT tasting popcorn, here are a few tips. 1) plug in the popper before first use to see if the rotating arm grinds against the edges. If it does, as mine did, do two things. First, loosen the centre bold holding down the arm, it is on too tight. Second, bend the arms until they no longer rub/grind the surface. Problem solved. Once I bent the arms, the popper worked terrific, and never once did it get stuck and need to turn the opposite way while cooking the popcorn. 2) Reduce the amount of oil used; I found that 2 tablespoons was more than sufficient for 4 quarts...three tablespoons is overkill. 3) Do not put butter in the top of the lid to melt on the popcorn while it is cooking; it creates WAY TOO MUCH moisture inside the cooker and ruins the popcorn by making it soggy. Instead, melt a few tablespoons of butter on the hot surface with the oil. The butter flavour will cook directly into the popcorn and you then only need to add salt, or a salt substitute. 3) Don't leave the cooker unattended; the moment the last kernel pops, unplug the popper and flip the popcorn into the lid or you will burn/scorch your popcorn.
If the three steps above are followed, you will have terrific results and this popper will last you for a long time.
I must say, I had one of these years ago and owning one again brings back terrific memories. It is fun to watch the popcorn pop! I plan to try the kettle corn recipe left by another reviewer on my next batch - looking forward to that!
Hope this review helps - this is a terrific product, and although the non-stick coating looks fairly cheap, it should last just fine if you take good care of the cooker. This product is nowhere near as flimsy or cheap as I had expected it to be based upon some other reviewers.
Buy one now! Happy Popping!

Proctor-Silex 34101 Fifth Burner Review

Proctor-Silex 34101 Fifth Burner

We got this to replace a burner bought off the shelf. It died within the first week. I have been much happier with the results for this burner as a replacement for our dead stove. In fact, it heats up faster that our stove used to. Produces good heat quickly and has worked well in almost all situations.
The only issue I have is with what seems to be an overtemp safety because it will cycle itself on and off. A pot will get hot quickly but it also seems to senses that the pot is still there and hot, and decides to take a rest or turner off the burner for 15-30 sec while things in your pot stop boiling. It seems to come back quickly to reheat again, but cooking with an even hear is lost as the burner cycles on/off.

This is a well made product and a good idea ! The popup handle snugs down with a push so you can put a lid on the pot, then releases back up at a touch so you can lift the steamer without getting your fingers burnt.
The legs are solid, not the flimsy folding type. The basket is extra large, which means it can steam a whole lot in even big 8-qt stew pots, but it doesn't fit in a small 2-qt pot.

The highly functional pop-up steamer offers a variety of features that make it easy to cook a variety of foods. A simple press on the handle pops the steamer up for added length, making it easy and safe to insert and remove. Freshly steamed vegetables are a snap. Press the handle again to lock it down for compact storage. For extra reach, a fork can be inserted into the handle. Folding feet make it easy to store the steamer and easy to elevate it by 1-3/4 inches, leaving room enough underneath for water. Simply unscrew the handle when the entire basket is needed for steaming larger items like fish fillets. The steamer is made to fit pots 8 inches in diameter and up.
