(More customer reviews)This is a quality product, perfect for cooking for 1-3 people (smaller families, college students, etc.). I highly recommend it. It is so easy to use and fuss-free. Also, most smaller crock pots have only one setting, but this one has three (high, low, and keep warm). It has a nice glass lid and a removable ceramic crock, both of which you can clean in the dishwasher. I use mine at least a few times a week, and I'm very satisfied with the purchase.

You MUST follow Nordic Wares instructions for cooking rice. Using any other recipes/directions, will result in your rice being soggy & the water not absorbing. The one noticible difference between the other cookers I tried and this one is that I didn't have to clean my microwave after using this rice cooker. NO SPILLS & OVERFLOWS! I just ordered a second cooker to place in storage just in case this model is discontinued. GREAT PRODUCT AT A GREAT PRICE!

(More customer reviews)I bought this crock-pot specifically for traveling, and I bought a "crock pot travel bag" to go with it. The first time traveling, my soup spilled everywhere (even though we carried it upright). The lock kept the meat and veggies in, but I had a huge mess to clean up when I got to work, and I lost a good inch of liquid as a result. I will be more careful next time and pack it in the car on the floor with towels, but the entire reason I bought a locking-lid crock pot was so I wouldn't have to go to all that bother.
It is very handsome, though, and cooks nicely.
EDIT -- Later today, I was taking the crock pot home. The food inside was warm, but not hot. It had been on the "warm" setting for hours and was turned off completely for 15 minutes before being packed up. I locked the lid, and 15 minutes later in the car *pop* the lid shattered.
Very, very dissapointing.

(More customer reviews)I bought this cooker after buying the Hamilton Beach stow and go slow cooker - 5 quart. I returned the 5 quart because I really didn't like the meals that it produced and it was way too big. I bought this tiny cooker in all honesty to make my irish oatmeal. Which I might add it does beautifully.
I do a lot of Indian cooking...on a whim I decided to split my rogan josh recipe and put 1/2 in the cooker and 1/2 on the stovetop. I must tell you that my husband and I were blown away by the cooker's results. The flavors permeated the meat and the texture was spot on. This is an amazing little appliance. I've had it for about a year and only used it for Oatmeal up until this past Sunday. I can tell you its sturdy, reliable and perfect for singles and couples.

Bacon cooks crispy in a short amount of time and the pan cleans with ease. A paper towel over the bacon keeps the microwave neat and spatter-free. It is dishwasher safe but not necessary to waste electricity for an item that is so easy to wipe clean with a little soap & h2o and no elbow grease. Think I'll take a 3-minute break from this review and make some bacon!

(More customer reviews)I just got the 3-in-1 a few days ago and have only used it once, but I'm so impressed! I almost got a single-crock six-quart slow cooker before I discovered this one, and I'm so pleased that I purchased this one instead.
Like others, I really appreciate the three crocks, the clever way they nest and that one lid fits all. The two- and four-quart crocks are easier to handle than the six, especially in the sink, so I expect to get a lot more use out of this than if I had gone with a single-crock six. Also, the two smaller crocks fit in my microwave, and the six would not -- very handy for heating the leftovers. I'm glad to have the six-quart crock as well as the other two, though.
The unit seems more sturdily constructed than some I saw in stores. I personally prefer the simple knob over the programmable touchpads. As at least one other reviewer mentioned, the high and low settings really do seem to work.
I wish you could use the lid in the microwave, but you can't, probably because it has a metal rim. A 10-1/4" dinner plate served as a nicely fitting substitute, but it was more difficult to remove from the steaming crock than it would have been using the crock's lid with its knob. This one complaint is a minor one and not important enough to downgrade to four stars in light of the unit's great assets.

(More customer reviews)Excellent rice cooker. So far, I've used it for white and brown rice with and without the automatic timer and it works great. I'll use it for shushi next week. With the automatic timer feature you set up the machine and then tell the rice cooker the time of day when you want your rice to be ready. After that time it switches automatically into 'keep warm' mode so your rice is ready to eat in case you're delayed. This is one of the main reasons I bought this specific model.
A few things to note so you can make a more informed purchase.
1- Cup size is different. I guess a japanese cup is different than those used in the US. Therefore, 10 cups in this case actually translates to 7.5 US-sized cups of rice.
2- Cooking time is longer than 'normal'. I included the estimates for some types of rice straight from the manual. The zojirushi website also has estimates.
a- Quick cooking (only white rice): 35-45 min
b- White Rice: 51-60 min
c- Sushi rice: 47-58 mn
d- Brown rice: 82-108
3- The minimum amount of rice you can make with the 10 cup model is 1 cup except for sweet, mixed, and brown rice where the minimum is 2 cups. Mixed rice is one where you ad a few other ingredients that will cook together with the rice 9eg. soup stock, soy sauce). For the 5 cup the minimum you can make is 1 cup for all types of rice except porridge where you can make 0.5 cups. Again, these are the smaller cup sizes.
4- For those with small kitchens, the 10 cup machine has the following dims (WxDxH in inches): 11x14.2x9.4. The 5 cup is 10x13x8.1
Enjoy perfect rice every time. Spend your time preparing other parts of your meal.

(More customer reviews)Bought this to replace an old metal slow cooker; the crock of course makes all the difference. This unit is well designed, maintains a constant temp, and is easy to clean. Size is good for a family, we've made roasts, soups, dressing, etc. for groups from 4-10 so far .My only concern is the long-term performance of the plastic parts of the lid locking mechanism; they are fine now and may last forever, who knows.
I've never had a slow cooker with a digital display or timer. I'm not sure why you'd want one...in the words of my grandmother, "it's just one more thing to break." The way we use it it's always turned on in the morning before work (on low) and cooks all day. A timer or digital display would make no difference. There are slow cookers for $100+ out there but this Crock-Pot meets my needs quite well.

I made a mess out of cooking rice (all the negative reviews are true) until I figured that I should use slightly less water than the recommended quantity. After that, I spent 1 year using it nonstop (we eat rice every day).
365 days later, the non-stick bowl is BADLY chipped, like little bubbles that burst on the bottom and left pinhead-sized chips. I swear that I never used anything else than the included plastic scoop (and sponge for cleaning) and never ever scratched it, so I'm 100% sure the non-stick coating quality is to blame.
Add to that that non-stick coating is toxic*, this baby is out of my kitchen as soon as I can afford a Zojirushi. They're not as elegants, but they last forever.For more info on teflon toxicity, visit http://www.ewg.org

Clean up is SUPER EASY IF YOU DON'T WAIT TOO LONG. If you use this machine properly, as per instruction manual and/or rice cooking directions, a once over with a wet sponge to the outer shell and under the lid will take 2 minutes. Soak non-stick rice pot as soon as possible.
I specifically purchased it to make JOOK... a traditional Cantonese "comfort food". It whipped it up SUPER quick: just under an hour.
In response to previous review: RECIPE PROPORTION- 1 CUP jasmine rice to 5 CUPS water with 1 teaspoon of salt, some ground or fresh ginger and a splash of sesame oil. You can add more water LATER if you like it thinner but BE WARNED... more than 5 cups of water when you first start will cause boil-over and that's a clean up misery! The typical consistency should be like oatmeal. The trick is to STIR occasionally because the water WILL separate once the mixture gets closer to being done. Every 15 minutes should suffice. I think that's why a previous review yielded a soggy rice bottom and liquid on top.
In response to review about Teflon flaking: DON'T USE METAL - EVER! The unit comes with a plastic ladle. Don't use Brillo or harsh scrub sponges to clean it - EVER!
In response to review about "OFF" switch: There is NONE. The cooker is designed to cook the rice/soup until its "Done"... and it mysteriously DOES! Then it goes into "Warmer" mode. The user manual instructs you to UNPLUG it when not in use. A bizarre design flaw but appliances should be unplugged when not in use anyway.
The only strange part about this cooker is the "Steamer" accessory. The lid is hinged it doesn't close with EITHER the Steamer or Soup lid attachment. If your kitchen isn't properly ventilated you may experience a considerable amount of heat and humidity using this option.
I'm extremely happy with my purchase. I got more as gifts.

Every morning, instead of boiling eggs on the stove, waiting almost 30 minutes to an hour for hard boiled eggs, I stick the eggs into this egg maker and only wait a couple of minutes. Clearly, a hundred bucks does make a bit of a difference, the most obvious and pleasing of which is the thick, non-stick cooking vessel. There are two that come with this appliance, a rice cooker with graduations for different kinds of rice, and a slow cooker, both non-stick. No more soaking with soap and attacking the pan with a scouring pad after every batch of rice. Being an electronic rice cooker, the other noteworthy advantages over its cheapo predecessor are the timer function and truly hands-off operation, which translates into more food being prepared at home. If it costs $8-10 to buy a modest lunch, and perhaps a dollar or so to prepare one in the cooker (which is likely more nutritious anyway,) the savings quickly add up. Using a device like this to prepare meals really saves time.
So far, I've cooked several flawless batches of brown rice, a process that the manufacturer has made near-absolutely idiot-proof. There's no point going into detail here--just read and follow the instructions and you'll get a nicely-made batch. I also used the high slow-cook setting to prepare some buckwheat, which came out fine, but the quicker rice-cooking modes will work equally well on buckwheat or other grains with some experimentation. Dig around online to find recipes. I look forward to making some soups with this thing.
Construction is typical for the Sanyo brand: solid and refined. Zojirushi appears to be the favored brand in this category for whatever reason, but the cheaper Sanyo offerings have the same features and careful attention to detail.

Weber 731001 Smokey Mountain Cooker 22.5-Inch Smoker Review

(More customer reviews)I am cooking ribs on my 22" WSM as I type this. This will be my third time cooking since I received it a few weeks ago and the results I've been getting have been some of the tastiest barbeque I've ever had. The design is excellent, the build quality is excellent, the instructions and support from Weber - all excellent. But after all this "hype" the reason I only gave it 4 stars out of 5 is because, as good as it is, I believe Weber has over-priced it somewhat. I would have expected something of this size and quality to be priced closer to $350 or so.
Anyway, the good news is, the key to successful barbeque is temperature control. I threw away money a few years ago on a cheaper smoker in which it was almost impossible to control and ruined several dollars worth of meat trying. But temperature control is what makes this unit great. The WSM almost feels like cheating. Once you get it set, it just seems to stay locked into a very narrow temperature range requiring very little adjustment as it cooks. It's as easy to keep it "locked in" at 200 degrees as it is to keep it at 325. However, there are a few little tips and tricks of the trade to cooking on a smoker and barbeque in general that require a little research, trial and error, and discussion with experienced "pit masters." For this I highly recommend The Virtual Weber Bullet website and The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board. There is a wealth of knowledge there and you can get questions answered by professionals as well as pit master wannabes who are just starting out and learning too.
I would recommend starting with a Weber Smokey Mountain, a high-quality, easy to use smoker, rather than wasting money on a cheaper one only to realize later that it's too frustrating to use and then have to break down and buy the good one later. That would be the MOST expensive way to get into barbeque at home.
