Hot Plate Steamboat with Pot Review

My boyfriend and I both love shabu shabu, so I was thrilled when he bought me this shabu pot as a gift. The first night we used it, we laid out a feast of sliced beef, lamb and vegetables which congregated around our shiny, brand new shabu pot. Starved and salivating, we turned on the shabu pot, tummies aching in anticipation of the meal to come. The water heated, began steaming, and a few tiny bubbles rose to the surface... but simply never broke into a rolling boil. We tried cooking one of the pieces of meat in the water, but it was clear that the water simply wasn't hot enough, and was never going to get hot enough. We ended up cooking our shabu on the stove. Another glitch is that the hot plate kept turning itself off. There were similar complaints about the 2-in-1 version of this product, so I don't think the problem was specific to the one we bought!

Son Of Brisket Large Charcoal Grill Review

I got my 4-48 SOB direct from the Mfg. I have had pits before from Texas and none compare to this one. First off the size of the SOB will let you cook anything and anyway you prefer. Want to grill -16- rib-eyes no problem. Want to slo-cook -6- slabs of ribs laying flat..gofor it!! To get this size of pit from anyother pit mfg in the state of Texas will cost you double and big time shipping costs. The smoker box will let you slo cook all day long at 250 degrees..just add a little briquets every hour and that is it. Some prople dont understand why I like large bbq pits. It is really quite simple. I like them for their flexability. You dont have to have the whole sucker full of food. But you have safe spots. You can sear steaks and chops and then move them to a cooler area to finish up. You can throw in two full briskets or a small pig with no problem. This pit is made to last. The body is 14 gauge steel and the door is 11 gauge. You get a top notch pit thermometer as well. There is no need to have a bbq to grill with and a smoker for lo and slo. The SOB does it all. If you want to do competition Que in your backyard get a SOB!! This pit is pound for pound the best around. I should know, I have just about had them all!!

Miele : KM5753 30 Touch Control Induction Cooktop - Black Review

Miele : KM5753 30 Touch Control Induction Cooktop - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a truly outstanding cooktop. I have cooked with electric, gas, and now magnetic induction, and magnetic induction has been the most enjoyable experience by far. It's really not even close. Prior to hooking this cooktop up I timed how long it took my (previous) gas oven to cook 96 ounces of water in an uncovered pot: 11 minutes and 30 seconds. When I hooked up this cooktop and tried the same amount of water in the same pot, it took 4 minutes and 45 seconds to bring it to a rolling boil. It is amazing how fast this thing cooks. I can boil water in a small saucepan in under 2 minutes.
And not only does it heat things up amazingly fast, but it also allows one to bring the temperature way down to do things like delicately melting chocolate.
Another huge plus about this cooktop is that the hobs ("hobs" is a more official word for "burner") are diagonal instead of the typical way they are laid out in strips of two each. This was the main reason I narrowed down to this particular induction cooktop (other than it being made by Miele, a company that makes ultra-superb products). By placing the hobs diagonally it opens up a lot more space for placing cookware. I've had all four hobs used up by relatively large cookware, without any of the pieces bumping into each other. This was also the reason I went with the 30-inch model instead of the 36-inch (well, that and the fact I would've had to do some cabinet rearranging to get the 36-ince model into place). Simply put, with the diagonal layout I didn't feel the need for a fifth hob.
It's a breeze to clean, you can associate a timer with each hob to control when each shuts off (a great feature for, say, pressure cooking), the range of cooking temperatures is very wide, and it's great to know that when I hit "7" for a temperature that I get a rolling simmer and when hitting "6" I get a lower simmer--every single time. Also, provided you have a decent set of cookware (and likely even if you don't), say goodbye to hot handles: induction cooktops are so efficient that unless using cookware laden with very cheap handles (and I bet even cheap handles wouldn't make a difference) your handles won't heat up. We've been cooking with this cooktop for 6 months now and we have yet to experience a warm handle. I'll note here for people unfamiliar with induction cooking that the cooktop doesn't actually use heat to heat up the pan. Instead, it uses magnetic induction, which causes the cookware to heat up. Consequently, you need magnetic cookware in order for this to work--such as magnetic stainless steel or cast iron.
One thing I should note is that I specifically bought a very expensive set of cookware to use with this cooktop: the Demeyere Atlantis collection. I mention this only because I have read that cheaper cookware may emit some buzzing or even popping when used with induction cooktops. The Demeyere cookware does not emit any noises, and I'd expect that because it really was designed for induction--though also perfectly capable of cooking wonderfully with gas or electric. So, if you're going to buy this kind of cooktop, I suggest going all the way and getting some quality cookware. I should also note that the Demeyere Atlantis cookware is incredible cookware...it is leagues above the cookware we had prior to getting it. You should see how it cleans!
This is a wonderful, well designed product and I give it 5-plus stars. My wife and I love cooking with it and cooking is noticeably more enjoyable since we've had it. If you can afford to buy a Miele product you very likely won't be disappointed.

Cooktek MCD2500 MagnaWave Single Drop-In Induction Cooktop Review

Cooktek MCD2500 MagnaWave Single Drop-In Induction Cooktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used a CookTek 1800 for 4 years. As a cook, I was unable to accomodate myself to an anemic electric range. By the way, the oven is excellent, even if the burners are slow and underpowered. The CookTek changed all that. It's gets realy hot! Being far more efficient than the plain old fashioned resitive burners in the stove makes the difference, even though my cooktop is of relatively low power being designed to use 120 volt outlets. It simmers like a dream, changes temperatures like a wizard, far faster than any other method of cooking. I swear by it. The company's warranty and repair procedures are very fair. I imagine they have to be since these units are designed for commercial use.
There are only two drawbacks. Both seem minor to me. First, like every other electrical appliance in the kitchen, induction cook tops are not perfectly reliable. Mine have failed twice over the last four years. Second, because of the mandatory cooling fan enclosed in the table top hob, it's a bit noisy.
One more advantage makes me willing to overlook these annoyances. I live in an apartment in California. When I want to grill, I simply take my CookTek onto the balcony, put it on a small table and top it with a heavy cast-iron grill. I love it!

Aroma AeroMatic Convection Oven Review

Aroma AeroMatic Convection Oven

The chrome on the racks in this oven chips off very quickly into your food. Virtually no one carries replacement parts. The oven cooks OK, but the numbers that tell you temperature and time wash off with dish soap. So after a few uses, you have to guess. Aroma's customer service is answered by a machine - even in the middle of the day - and you are told to call back during regular business hours. If you do elect to leave message - you will grow old waiting for a return call.

Nostalgia BCS-997 Stainless-Steel 3-Station Buffet Server with Separate Heat Controls and Glass Lids Review

I purchased this a few months ago. Within using it about 3-4 times, all 3 warming trays got holes which made the product useless. I contacted the manufacture and it took weeks and weeks of emails and voicemails before someone finally replied to my complaints of a defective product and sent me 3 replacement warming trays. All 3 replacement trays now have holes after 3 uses. Dont buy this product unless you want to only use it a few times and then wait weeks and weeks to get new trays. Waste of money. They should recall the item and offer full refunds.

T-Fal Simply Smart 2.65-Pound Cool Touch Deep Fryer Review

T-Fal Simply Smart 2.65-Pound Cool Touch Deep Fryer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tend to be fairly obsessive about researching items before I purchase them. And if I can't do it online, I'll sometimes spend an hour at a store pushing every button, assessing the feel of the material, and contemplating the functional attributes. One such epic shopping experience took place with this fryer. The store I was at had 6 other fryers, similar in size, but under different brand names (granted, most appliances are manufactured by a hand full of companies). The T-Fal Simply Smart far outpaced all the others in construction quality. The handle, bowl, and lid all seem to be built in a way that means they'll last! While most of it is still plastic, it seems to be of a higher grade and thicker.
I've used it 4 times and opted to buy one for my brother to replace his old fryer. It heats quickly, can heat to 374 degrees (great for sweet potato fries and other fries), and is easy to clean, considering the basket and lid can go in the dishwasher (the manual says the lid can't, but T-Fal's website says it can, hmm... I put it in the dishwasher with no ill affect aside from the discoloration of the inside aluminum). The inner bowl has a non-stick coating which I hope will prevent the caking that happens on older fryers.
My one and only complaint is the latching mechanism is poorly designed. The lid closes and locks extremely well, but when you need to open the lid, it's too well latched for the plastic open button to get the job done. The issue is with the dual latches in the lid. The one closest to the open button releases just fine... it's the one on the other side. To fix this (because I like this fryer that much), I used a razor blade to saw off most of the latch grasper. I left just a little bit to keep it functional and now, it's works like a charm.
Just as the other reviewer mentioned, it also has a thick rubber ring around the lid that seals well to the handle and base. This effectively keeps oxygen exposure to stored oil to a minimum, thus extending its life/lowering the rancidity rate.
Just a few other tid bits... the chord (I'm assuming most manufacturers are going this route) is a magnetic release. It will pop away from the fryer base with the slightest bump. This could be annoying to some, but I'm pretty grateful for it with two dogs and a young nephew running around. It stays connected just fine when undisturbed, which is the whole point.
The exterior stainless portion gets fairly warm when the oil is heated, but it's not so hot you can't hold your hand to it for extended periods of time.
Finally, the fryer has a wider diameter than many of the others... this seems to increase splattering contact with the lid and maybe decrease the basket's depth when lowered. On the flip side, with more surface area than deeper fryers, I can fry bigger batches that cook more evenly. And really, I'm not sure when I'd be frying anything that needed to be deeper in the oil. Well, apple fritters maybe but I suppose I wouldn't use the basket with those?
